If you’ve shopped for a carpet cleaner lately, you know how expensive those little bottles can be. There are a lot of recipes floating around the internet for making your own, but how do you know what to trust? Carpets had stains long before effective carpet cleaners and machines were available, so I tend to go back to basics when I put together a cleaning solution. The idea is for your carpet to be clean, stain free, and soft when you are finished.
The easiest solution for spot cleaning is to mix a clear liquid laundry detergent with a little fabric softener, some “oxy” cleaner (name brand or generic), and a gallon of hot water. Mix them all together at your desired strength, and you have a great all-purpose stain cleaner for your carpets. Specialty stains will obviously require something more specialized.
If you have your own machine, you still end up paying a lot of money for a cleaning solution to put in your machine. Instead, try filling a gallon jug mostly with hot water, adding a cup of clear liquid laundry detergent, a cup of vinegar, and a few drops of whatever essential oils you like. I use lemon or lavender. Mix the ingredients and you’ll find that they work as well, or better, than your expensive store bought cleaner. There’s also the added benefit of knowing what you are putting into your house.
With all these cleaners, the stain may be gone, but the smell often lingers. Freshening up your carpet before company comes can be crucial. No one wants lingering pet or child smells ruining a visit from friends. There are two ways to freshen up your carpet. The first is with a spray, and the second is with a powder that you sprinkle and vacuum up.
To make a spray, mix 1 part white vinegar with 2 parts water. Then add in whatever essential oils you’d like your house to smell like. Spray your carpet a half hour before you have guests. The vinegar smell will dissipate, leaving the essential oil smell behind.
For a powder that you vacuum, mix a cup of powdered laundry detergent, a cup of baby powder, and 6-10 drops of essential oils in a shakeable canister. Shake to mix it all up. Before you have company, sprinkle on all surfaces of your carpet, let it sit for about ten minutes, then vacuum it up. Your carpets will smell fresh and clean.
